Why Do We Struggle With Remembering Who We Are?
So yesterday I did a podcast episode with a friend of mine, (The Royal Hope Mission), talking about identity. The episode will be out in a couple weeks, I'll try to put it on here or share where to find it when it does come out.
As I was preparing for the podcast I realized that finding our true identity is something that I am very passionate about.
I'm not going to give any spoilers to the details in the podcast episodes, you'll have to listen for yourself when it comes out. And this was the first time I've ever done anything like that, so I was and am very excited about it, and hopefully it won't be the last time!
In talking and thinking about identity a lot lately God told me I should do another post today to write out my current ponderings on the subject.
When you know who you are, a Chosen Child of the Most High God, it is powerful. When you are firmly rooted in that Truth it is even more so.
As Christians one thing that I have noticed is that we forget all too quickly who we are. True identity isn't taught that often. It is certainly not taught to it's full extent in children's Sunday school! We hear that we are Children of God but that's about the extent of it. Why? Why are we not teaching what all it entails to be Children of God? Why are we so quickly forgetting who we are?
Because it's counter-cultural.
We so quickly forget who we are because we are used to sin focused culture. From the time of the fall in Genesis chapter 3, till Jesus came and saved us, humans lived in a sin focused culture. Which brought about a works based mentality. That mindset is still very common today in many cultures. You have to work to save yourself. You can only be saved by your own actions. You're the only one who can get yourself out of the mess you've made.
Then came Jesus. He came not only teaching a message of grace and salvation but He lived His message. He brought Light where there had only been darkness. He saved us by defeating what ensnared us and told us that we, the People of God, would never be more than slaves owned by darkness. Then our Kinsman Redeemer came and bought us with the Blood of True Unconditional Love. To make us once again Children of the Most High, the Living King.
It's so wonderful. Why do we so easily forget? Because grace, unconditional Love, forgiveness, and mercy goes against our flesh. Following Jesus with everything we have, all that we are, isn't comfortable. It's not stagnant.
We so quickly forget the truth because we are used to darkness and lies. There are times where we might not want anyone over us, guiding us or telling us what to do, so it's just easier or perhaps more engrained to believe that we have to rely on ourselves for our own salvation. Thus, knowingly or not, we spit upon the sacrifice of Jesus, because we think that we can handle this world all by ourselves. Pride. Disobedience. And idolatry of self.
There are times where we believe fear and think that our sins are too much for God. He can't possibly know or deal with everything we have done. He can't possibly have meant that He would forgive us every single time. There must be a limit to God. Doubt. Putting God into a box of human limitations. Thinking that sin has more power than God.
There are times that we forget that we are Chosen. We live in a world where it is often taught that we can make ourselves be who we are, and change ourselves according to various fleshly desires, or the changes in the world. Doubting God divinely created us uniquely with special giftings and purposes.
We are Saved. We are Chosen. We are Loved. More than we will ever be able to comprehend.
